Officer Daniel Bier was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call at 4:30 pm.
He was shot in the chest with a .45 caliber handgun as he entered the home. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended by members of the Maryland State Police.
The suspect was initially convicted of first-degree murder, however, was convicted of a lesser charge of second-degree murder during a second trial. He was released after serving only 5 years.
Officer Bier had served with the Cambridge Police Department for 7 years. He was survived by his wife, sister, and two brothers.
