Patrolman Gregory Stewart succumbed to gunshot wounds inflicted one week earlier while taking police action when a suspect attempted to rob him and a friend in the 4800 block of Fredericksburg Road in San Antonio.

The two were in San Antonio for Army National Guard training and were leaving a club when an armed man exited an SUV and demanded their wallets.

Patrolman Stewart immediately drew attention from his friend as he attempted to subdue the assailant. The man opened fire as he fled the scene, striking Patrolman Stewart.

Despite being wounded, Patrolman Stewart was able to provide a description of the shooter to responding officers. He was transported to a local hospital where he remained for eight days before succumbing to his wounds.

As a result of Patrolman Stewart's descriptions, three suspects were apprehended and charged with capital murder. In September 2007 one of the suspects plead guilty to a lesser charge of murder and was sentenced to 35 years.

Patrolman Stewart was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Army National Guard member. He had served with the Beeville Police Department for four years. He is survived by his son, parents, sister, and two brothers.
