Superintendent Charles North was fatally stabbed in the back with a chisel by an inmate at the Hospital for Insane Criminals at Dannemora after he had just finished a conversation with that inmate.
The inmate, a trustee, who had been transferred to the hospital from Sing Sing Prison in 1909 gave no reason for his action.
Doctor North had served with the Hospital for Insane Criminals at Dannemora for 13 years. He was survived by his wife and family. He was known throughout the country for his work with insane criminals.
