Patrolman George Lentz was shot and killed by a suspect near the East Hamilton Firehouse, on Shuler Avenue, by a drunk man whom he had just taken a large hammer from.

The man went to his home, retrieved a .32-20 caliber rifle, and began searching for Patrolman Lentz. When he located him near the firehouse, he opened fire, shooting Patrolman Lentz in the torso.

The suspect was apprehended, convicted of manslaughter, and sentenced to 1-1/2 years in prison.

Patrolman Lentz had served with the Hamilton Police Department for ten years. He was survived by his wife and two stepsons and is buried in Saint Stephens Cemetery, Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio.
