Patrolman Artemus Fish died of lockjaw caused by internal injuries he received when he was thrown from a horse while on patrol.

Patrolman Fish was on horseback patrol on Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn when he was thrown from his horse. The horse then stepped on Patrolman Fish, causing internal injuries. Those injuries caused an infection that lead to Patrolman Fish's death.

Patrolman Fish had served with the New York City Police Department for three years and was assigned to the Prospect Park Precinct. He was survived by his wife, parents, and two sisters and is buried at Highland Cemetery in Sidney Center, New York.
