Patrolman Henry Buschmann died of typhoid fever he contracted while assigned to a Red Cross Typhoid Hospital in Long Island City.

He had been assigned for duty at the hospital on September 10th, 1898, to assist with Spanish American War soldiers who were being moved there from Camp Wikoff. He contracted typhoid fever himself after coming into contact with soldiers who had the disease.

He died at his home on October 8th, 1898.

Patrolman Buschmann had served with the New York City Police Department for one year. He had previously served with the Long Island City Police Department for 10 years and had obtained the rank of Senior Captain before Long Island City was annexed by New York City. He was survived by his wife and three children.
