Agent James Kerrigan succumbed to abdominal injuries sustained three months earlier when he fell eight feet into an areaway during a raid on an opium den in Newark, New Jersey's, Chinatown. Although injured, Agent Kerrigan continued with the raid and knocked down a door with a sledge hammer.

For several weeks following the raid he complained of sudden pains and eventually checked into Misericordia Hospital in New York City, New York. He remained in the hospital for one week and succumbed to his injuries after undergoing abdominal surgery.

Agent Kerrigan was survived by his wife two young sons.
