Patrolman Thomas Farrell was shot and killed by three suspects he was attempting to arrest at the corner of McClure Avenue and Woods Run Avenue. At least two of the suspects opened fire on Patrolman Farrell, striking him with two different caliber bullets.
Patrolman Farrell had served with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for 20 years and was assigned to the Woods Run Police Station, present-day Zone 1 Police Station North Side. He was a widower and survived by his four children.
