Lieutenant James Carroll was shot and killed after being severely beaten by a theft suspect.
During the arrest the man attacked Lieutenant Carroll and beat him, slashed him with a knife, and fracture his skull. The suspect then shot Lieutenant Carroll in the neck before fleeing. Lieutenant Carroll succumbed to his wounds the following day.
A posse of officers along with Lieutenant Carroll's son trapped the suspect in a house near Eastpoint a few hours after the incident. Lieutenant Carroll's son, the first one to enter the house, shot and killed the suspect when he attempted to attack him with a chair.
Lieutenant Carroll had served with the Fulton County Police Department for 25 years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, five brothers, and five sisters.
