Deputy Compier and Officer Weldon Wilson, of the Wetumka Police Department, were shot and killed while transporting a man to jail. They had just arrested the man for illegally selling whiskey. The man was able to gain control of Officer Wilson's revolver and shoot both officers.
The suspect was arrested, convicted of two counts of murder, and sentenced to death. A year later the Oklahoma Court of Appeals said the prosecuting attorney was prejudice and granted the suspect a new trial. He was convicted of two counts of murder and sentence to two life terms. He was paroled on June 21, 1944. He died in 1971.
Deputy Compier had been with the agency for five years and was survived by his wife.
