Deputy Sheriff Lee Pool was shot and killed around 8 p.m. as he and a posse attempted to arrest a man who had murdered Deputy Sheriff Richard McCoy, of the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, on May 16th, 1881.

As the deputies identified themselves at the home of the suspect some 10 miles southwest of Rockdale, the suspect refused to surrender and opened fire from inside the home with a Winchester rifle.
