Sergeant Tommy Hammock was shot and killed after an altercation with a group of men.

Sergeant Hammock had just finished working special duty at a basketball game and had stopped at a fast-food store when he asked a couple of young males in the parking lot to turn down their loud stereo. The young men followed him home, pulled behind him, and blocked his vehicle, and as he exited his car, he was shot once in the chest.

Three suspects were arrested and tried in connection with the shooting. Two were convicted of murder and sentenced to life. The third subject was acquitted.

Sergeant Hammock had served with the Augusta Police Department for 31 years. He is survived by his mother, daughter, and granddaughter.
