City Marshal George Young was shot and killed after informing a drunk man that he should not be driving. Three officers responding to Marshal Young's aid shot and wounded the 39-year-old suspect and took him into custody.
The man was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 99 years in prison. In February of 1938, Governor Gordon Browning pardoned the suspect. Six months later Marshal Young's son shot and killed the man. He was charged with the suspect's murder, tried, and acquitted.
Marshal Young was survived by his wife and eight children.
