Patrolman Yglesias was shot and killed with his own gun when he attempted to eject a rowdy customer from a bar.

The patrolman was off-duty and in civilian clothes inside a bar at 202 West 14th Street. A man entered the bar and attempted to order a drink. Seeing that the man was highly intoxicated, the bartender refused to serve the man. When service was refused, the man became disorderly. Patrolman Yglesias approached the man and attempted to remove him from the bar. The man attacked Patrolman Yglesias, stole his gun, then shot and killed him. Patrolman Yglesias's brother and two other men wrestled the gun away from the suspect, who then fled out of the bar and across the street where he was apprehended by a police sergeant in a nearby store.

The suspect was convicted of manslaughter and released from prison in 1981.

Patrolman Yglesias was assigned to the Police Academy.
