Officer Stephen Williams was shot and killed while attempting to intervene in a fight between a father and son at the intersection of 14th Street and Columbia Road, NW.

Officer Williams had one handcuff on the son when he began resisting. As the officers struggled with him, the father came to the son's aid. Both officers were disarmed during the ensuing struggle.

The son shot and wounded Officer Williams and his partner. The father then fired two additional rounds into Officer Williams' prone body.

The son was found not guilty by reason of insanity. The father plead guilty to second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. The mother was also convicted of charges related to the shooting and placed on probation.

Officer Williams was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Metropolitan Police Department for one year. He was survived by his mother.
