Deputy Sheriff Charles Wicks was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man who had just shot a neighbor in Wendling, Oregon. The neighbor had confronted the man to complain about a pile of chicken manure that was in his yard.
As Deputy Wicks approached the man on a footbridge over Shepard Creek (now known as Beaver Creek), the subject opened fire on him, killing him.
The man committed suicide after holding hundreds of officers and citizens at bay for five hours.
