Patrolman Dick White was killed in a vehicle crash while pursuing a vehicle.
Patrolman White was pursuing a speeding motorist on his motorcycle when another driver who was making a turn cut a corner at Luther Avenue and East 55th Street. Patrolman White attempted to avoid a collision by hitting his brakes but struck the car after skidding 60 feet. He and the motorcycle flipped over and onto the car. He suffered a fractured skull.
The driver of the car he was chasing was never located. The driver that turned in front of him was charged with careless driving and manslaughter but was acquitted.
Patrolman White was survived by his mother, two sisters, and fiancee. His brother-in-law also served with the Cleveland Police Department.
