Police Officer Fred Veretto succumbed to wounds sustained when he was shot while he and other officers responded to a domestic violence call at 1018 18th Street on January 2nd, 1947.
After knocking on the home's door the husband opened fire, striking Officer Veretto in the leg, causing severe bleeding. The man was shot and killed by other officers.
Officer Veretto was transported to a local hospital where he underwent multiple blood transfusions before succumbing to complications of his injuries on January 7th, 1947.
Officer Veretto was a U.S. Navy combat veteran of WWII and had served with the Oakland Police Department for six years. He was survived by his wife and mother.
