Chief of Detectives Sam Street was shot and killed while confronting a bandit at a convenience store at the corner of San Pedro Street and Laurel Street.
He was on a stakeout of the location with two other detectives when the suspect entered the store to rob it.
Chief Street appeared and confronted the suspect. The man turned, pulled out two pistols, and fatally shot Chief Street.
The subject who shot him was an escapee from prison after having been convicted of a previous robbery in 1925. He was arrested and sentenced to death, but the sentence was later reduced to life in prison. He was paroled on September 13th, 1957. He was returned to prison in 1960 after being involved in a shooting in Washington state. He died in prison in 1965.
Chief Street had served with the San Antonio Police Department for 10 years. He was survived by his wife and children.
