Private Stewart was shot and killed during a sting operation against the "Black Hand Society". After a blackmail threat, $10,000 was placed in a decoy box. Private Stewart approached a passerby for questioning. The stranger pulled a gun and fired three shots at him. Private Stewart was able to return fire, killing the suspect.
Private Stewart had served with the Pennsylvania State Police for 13 months. He was survived by his parents and two brothers.
