Captain Charles Arman was shot and killed by six suspects after responding to a bank robbery-in-progress call.

As Captain Arman entered the bank, he was shot three times and died of his wounds at the scene.

The suspects escaped with approximately $1,000 in a car with Iowa license plates. Of the two suspects who were later identified, one escaped from prison while serving a 25-year sentence, but was later paroled and has since died. The other suspect committed suicide in Sidell, Illinois, following the robbery of a Clinton, Indiana, bank in 1930 in which two other men suspected in Captain Arman's murder were also killed. Of the remaining suspected individuals, one was recaptured three days after the same prison escape while another was killed by police during their recapture.

Captain Arman had served with the Lafayette Police Department for eight years.
