Conservation Officer Edward Starback was killed in an airplane crash in Lake Michigan while he flying from Boyne City to Beaver Island to pick up a boat he had left there the previous week.
His two adult sons, who were in town for a family reunion, were accompanying him at the time. It is believed the civilian pilot suffered a fatal heart attack during the flight, causing the plane to plunge into the lake approximately one mile off of the shoreline at Good Hart. All four men were killed.
Officer Starback was survived by his wife.
