Officer Gregory Sorenson succumbed to injuries sustained 18 months earlier when he was dragged by a car driven by a man he was attempting to arrest for drug dealing in Daytona Beach.

He was off duty at the time that he witnessed the drug deal at 2 a.m. and attempted to arrest the suspects. He suffered massive head and chest injuries and was in a coma until his death in July 1982. The suspects were charged with his murder but were acquitted at trial.

Officer Sorenson also served 12 years in the U.S. Army including two tours in Vietnam where he was shot in the face. He received two medals for his service.

Officer Sorenson is survived by his wife and son.
