Foreman Charles Sickles succumbed to injuries sustained the previous day when he was stabbed by an inmate in the Wood Factory at San Quentin State Prison.

Foreman Sickles was attempting to break up a fight between two inmates in which one of the inmates had been stabbed by the other prisoner. Foreman Sickles was in turn stabbed by the inmate who was stabbed. The inmate who started the incident was convicted of murdering both the other inmate and Foreman Sickles. He was subsequently sentenced to death.

Foreman Sickles was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He had served with the California Department of Corrections for 23 years and was survived by his wife and three children.
