Corporal William Shrewsbury was shot and killed when he and a deputy sheriff responded to investigate reports of a suicidal man at a home in Ranger, West Virginia.
When they arrived at the scene a man walked from the home, concealing a .32 caliber revolver behind his back. When the approached the patrol car he immediately started shooting through its window, striking Corporal Shrewsbury. Despite being mortally wounded, he was able to return fire and killed the suspect.
