Chief Ted Seman was shot and killed with his own weapon during a struggle with a mentally ill suspect. Chief Seman had responded to a family dispute, and had arrested the male subject.
The suspect attacked Chief Seman in his patrol car, shooting him with his own gun and then stabbing him multiple times. The man was committed for treatment after murdering Chief Seman but was released only five years later.
Chief Seman had served with the agency for less then one year. He was survived by his wife and three children.
In October 2008 a bill was signed into law renaming a stretch of US-10 the "George Edward (Ted) Seman Memorial Highway."
