Patrolman Frederick Anderson was struck and killed by a vehicle while investigating a stranded motorist on Route 58, just outside the borough limits at 2:35 am.
While on a traffic stop, giving field sobriety tests to a driver, a vehicle approaching the scene struck and killed a pedestrian who was standing nearby. It then veered across the road and struck the rear of the cruiser, pushing it into the first violator vehicle. Patrolman Anderson pushed the first driver from between the cars moments before the impact, but he himself was unable to escape and was crushed between them.
On December 29, the female driver of the vehicle pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving.
Patrolman Anderson was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had served with the Greenville/West Salem Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and six children.
The "Frederick R. Anderson Street" was named in his honor in Greenville.
