Deputy sheriffs Arthur F. Schnaubert, Jr. and Malcolm Reimers were involved in a rollover accident around 12:30 a.m. about 4.3 miles northeast of McCamey on King Mountain Road.
The deputies had been on a roadblock after an armed robbery in Odessa, and the deputies began in pursuit of a vehicle they believed to be the robbers. The wrecked vehicle was discovered at about 6:30 a.m. Deputy Sheriff Schnaubert was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other deputy was taken to the hospital in serious condition. The deputy told investigators they were chasing a vehicle when their patrol car went off the road and sideswiped several guard posts, went into a pasture, and overturned three times.
Deputy Sheriff Schnaubert was survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, two brothers, four sisters, and four grandchildren. His father, Arthur F. Schnaubert, Sr., was the first sheriff of Upton County in 1910 and served until 1914.
He was buried in the McCamey Cemetery.
