Deputy Sheriff Dennis Allred was shot and killed after stopping to help at the scene of what he believed to be a stranded motorist towing another vehicle.
The vehicle turned out to be stolen. As he spoke with two occupants a third unseen occupant shot him in the back of the head. All three were captured a few days later.
The shooter was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death. His sentenced was later commuted to life without parole. Later his sentence was commuted a third time to 50 years to life. He was denied parole in 2011 and again in 2015. He will be eligible for parole again in 2020. The other two suspects were convicted of second degree murder.
Deputy Allred had served with the Kitsap County Sheriff's Department for 2-1/2 years. He is survived by his daughter.
