Deputy Game Warden George Rodolph was shot and killed on the Los Banos Gun Club preserve in Gadwall approximately five miles southeast of Los Banos, in Merced County, while attempting investigating two market hunters.
He had encountered the two in a buggy and attempted to count the number of ducks they had to determine if they had shot more than the legal limit. One of the men objected to the count and a shootout ensued in which Game Warden Rodolph and the man were both shot. The two subjects left Game Warden Rodolph's body in the road and continued into Los Banos.
The subject whos hot Game Warden Rodolph was acquitted.
Deputy Game Warden Rodolph had served with the agency for only two months.
