Sergeant Morris Albany was shot and killed in a tavern at the intersection of 15th Street and Shaw Terrace when he attempted to take action during a robbery while he was off duty.
The 24-year-old suspect shot him, but Sergeant Morris managed to return fire, hitting the suspect five times. One shot severed his spinal cord causing him to be paralyzed from the waist down. The suspect's 23-year-old accomplice was attacked by patrons and held until police arrived.
Both suspects were convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life. A few years later, the accomplice was transferred to Fairview Mental Hospital.
Sergeant Albany was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the Upland Borough Police Department for 10 years. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
