Chief Newton was shot and killed while answering a disturbance call. He was climbing a flight of stairs while attempting to talk a man at the top to put down a shotgun. The man suddenly raised it and shot Chief Newton. Officers walking behind Chief Newton returned fire and killed the suspect.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 48th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service to the native state of myself and my cherished son Larry Lasater who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

The bullets that kill our beloved officers kill a part of everyone who cared for them.
