Charles Edwin Newton

Chief Charles Newton was shot and killed while answering a disturbance call. He was climbing a flight of stairs while attempting to talk a man at the top to put down a shotgun. The man suddenly raised it and shot Chief Newton.

Officers walking behind Chief Newton returned fire and killed the suspect.

Mr. Newton was a distant relative of my Mother, Hattie Campbell Cook. I was a young boy when the Chief was killed. My mother always said what a good police officer and humanitarian Chief Newton was.
Tragic loss. Many of my family members have been in Law Enforcement. Thanks to God no one else lost their life but the Chief. We do not give them enough credit and appreciation for what they do.
