Sheriff Nelson died after being exposed to lethal doses of methane while attempting to rescue a father and son who had also become overtaken by the gas in a concrete tank on a dairy farm. All three men died as a result.

I was only 5 at the time of the accident, but I have memories of Dale. When I graduated from the Academy, my Aunt Tricia, Dales wife, presented me with my graduation certificate, posthumously for Uncle Dale.
