Officer Muscovich was shot and killed when he attempted to apprehend an armed robbery suspect while off duty. He observed the suspect shoot a store owner and then flee. He followed the man to a hotel and was engaged in a gunfight in the second-floor hallway. He struck the suspect three times and killed him, but not before being fatally wounded himself. He succumbed to his injuries one week after the incident.

Officer Muscovich had been acting as an Emergency Patrolman, filling in for an officer who had been called to serve in WWII, for ten months. He was survived by his wife and 8-year-old daughter.
