Deputy Mitchell was shot and killed while attempting to break up a disturbance at a local Christmas program. Deputy Mitchell was inside attending the program when he was notified of a disturbance outside. When he went out side to investigate he was shot three times and fatally wounded.

Three brothers were later arrested and charged with his murder.

Deputy Mitchell was survived by his wife, five children, two brothers, and three sisters.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 103rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
