Patrolman Michael is my Great-grandmother's father. He moved his family to Florida from West Virginia via the unpaved Blue Ridge Parkway during the Great Depression. The move took a few months because every time it rained, his old Model-T got stuck in the mud. When this happened, they'd camp out for up to several days until the road became passable. He and his son hunted during this voyage to feed the family. The unpaved Blue Ridge Parkway was navigable only by white-washed bear-shaped placards. Once in Florida, his wife sold baked goods and made a name for herself by doing business with "Colored's." Being from West Virginia, they did not understand Segregation. Elmer found a job as a policeman but, unfortunately, was killed while on duty only a year or two before his daughter's husband died during an air battle in the Pacific. Their service to this country won't be forgotten as long as we remember.
