Patrolman Paul Metzger was killed in an automobile accident on West Dorothy Lane while responding to assist a security guard who had apprehended a shoplifting suspect. During the response Patrolman Metzger's patrol car hydroplaned on the wet road surface and struck a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

Patrolman Metzger had served with the agency for just under 3 years.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 40th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
