Patrolman Mead was shot and killed by a juvenile while attempting to arrest him for burglary. The suspect had stolen $12 and two guns from a tavern. Several officers noticed the suspect and as Patrolman Mead caught him he was shot in the chest and arm.

Patrolman Mead had been with the agency for only 17 days. He was survived by his wife and two young daughters.
