Guard Harry McVay succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained one week earlier during an escape attempt at the Rhode Island Penitentiary.
One of the prisoners who attempted to escape committed suicide with the same gun used to shoot Guard McVay.
The weapons had been smuggled into the prison's visitor area by accomplices of the inmates.
