Patrolman McKiven was killed in a motorcycle accident when his police motorcycle was struck by another car. The driver of the vehicle that caused the crash was charged with homicide by vehicle, but was acquitted due to a legal error made by the prosecutor.

Patrolman McKiven had served with the agency for 10 years. He was survived by his wife and three sons.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 27th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
