Patrolman McKeon was shot and killed with his own weapon by an emotionally disturbed person he had pursued the into Highbridge Park in Manhattan. Responding officers shot and killed the suspect.

Patrolman McKeon was murdered on his first day back on duty after serving four years with the United States Navy in World War II. He was assigned to the 34th Precinct.

As others have commented, it is ironic that you made it home safe after four years combat duty in WWII only to be shot on your first tour of duty upon your return .

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
