Patrolman Roy McKee was assigned to a motorcycle traffic detail on the day of his death. About 10:40 pm, McKee was attempting to stop a speeding auto on Gratiot Street. As Patrolman McKee approached the intersection with Tremont Street, he passed another car which unexpectedly turned left, sideswiping the motorcycle, throwing Patrolman McKee into the street. Patrolman Roy McKee died of a skull fracture in the hospital the next day.
The driver of the car which struck Patrolman McKee was a close friend of the officer, and never saw the motorcycle approaching when the accident happened.
He had served with the agency for only 10 months.
