Detective McGrath died of injuries he received when he was attacked the previous day.

Detective McGrath was assaulted inside a hotel by a cowboy who was in town for a rodeo championship as he attempted to arrest the man. After beating Detective McGrath the suspect stole his service weapon.

The suspect was later apprehended and charged with murder, but was set free after a grand jury failed to indite the suspect.

Detective McGrath was assigned to the 2nd Detective Squad.
