Patrolman McGovern was shot and killed by unidentified men after being ambushed shortly before midnight. He had just come on duty and was talking with two friends when they noticed a car stop down the street. Thinking the car was disabled, Patrolman McGovern approached it. As he did so a man standing on the running board opened fire, fatally wounding him. No suspects were ever identified or charged.
Patrolman McGovern had been with the agency for two months.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 90th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
