Deputy McCullah and Deputy Robert Schnur were killed in a helicopter accident. The Deputies were flying low in a helicopter in the Whittier Hills when they struck abandoned telephone wires in a canyon. The helicopter and its crew were not reported missing until the next morning when Deputy Schnur’s wife called. A search was started and the helicopter’s crash site was located at 7:30 AM. Autopsies determined both Deputies were killed on impact.

Deputy McCullah had been with the agency for six years and was survived by his fiancée.

I was stopped at the Santa Fe Springs fire department,at the same time deputies Schnur and McCullah had landed for a rest stop as I was eating lunch Dep Schnur asked if I would like a chopper ride as I had never done so I checked with my desk and was given permission to go, we took of and flew north over the 605 FWY then came south for about a total of maybe 20 minute flight ,we landed ,they left ,I went back on patrol, the next day I had a visit from the FBI asking about my flight , it was then that I found out that both of my friends had been killed I was stunned very sad they were both great guys
