Detective McCue and Detective Harold Beingesser were killed in an automobile accident while transporting a prisoner from Wood County back to Cleveland. Their vehicle was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of State Road 18 and State Road 25. Both detectives, the prisoner, and two occupants of the other car were all killed.

Detective McCue had served with the Cleveland Police Department for 7 years and was survived by his expectant wife, daughter, and two sons.

You are the grandpa that I never got to meet but was always proud of. You produced a wonderful man in my father Daniel McCue. I am sure you would've made a wonderful grandpa- your wife was an amazing woman and someone I was very blessed to have for a grandma. She was a blessing for my mom also since she lost hers. I wish we could've met here on Earth and you could've had much more time with all that loved you but I'm proud to say that you are a fallen hero and your my Grandpa. You will be very proud of the family you started! I love you!!!!
