Deputy West was shot and killed after he and another deputy went to a mobile home park to verify the address of a man wanted on several warrants. Another deputy was also shot and wounded. The suspect was apprehended two days later at a city rail station in New York City.

The suspect was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to death on June 20, 1996.

Deputy West is survived by his wife and two sons.

I sit here tonight reading about you from people all over the World and I couldn't be prouder. It's been sixteen years and not one day goes by that I dont think of you. You were my hero and always will be. Everyday I try to make you proud. Your grandkids know evrything there is to know about you because I wouldn't have it anyother way. I know your life is over but not to me. I just say I'll see you soon dad but not today.
