During the stop Trooper McCarter had called for assistance and was backed up by Patrolman Caisse. While on the scene gunfire erupted and both officers and two suspects were shot and killed. A third suspect was found wounded the next day. That suspect was sentenced to death but later had the sentence reduced to life.
Trooper Michael McCarter was a 9-year veteran of the Illinois State Police; assigned to District 6A, Ashkum. His wife and son survive.
