Officer McCarrick was struck and killed by a streetcar while crossing the intersection at West St. Paul and University Avenue. He had just stepped off of another streetcar and was crossing behind it when he stepped into the path of the oncoming streetcar.
Officer McCarrick had been with the agency for three years and was survived by his wife and two children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the one hundred and eighteenth anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
