Trooper McCabe was killed in a motorcycle accident while on patrol on Roosevelt Road near the Cook County / Dupage County line. An oncoming vehicle misjudged his speed and turned in front of him, causing a collision.

Trooper McCabe had served with the Illinois State Police for only six months and was assigned to District 4. He had been in law enforcement for over ten years. Trooper McCabe was survived by his wife.
